Transverse Laser Cooling of Fast Ion Beams at the Storage Ring Tsr

We review recent progress in laser cooling of fast stored ion beams at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring, particularly concerning the development of methods to extend longitudinal laser cooling to the transverse degrees of freedom. EEcient three-dimensional cooling has been obtained on the basis of two diierent mechanisms leading to a transverse-longitudinal coupling: Storage-ring dispersion in combination with a transverse gradient of the cooling force leads to a single-particle motional coupling, whereas intrabeam Coulomb collisions result in a thermal relaxation between the diierent degrees of freedom. We discuss the importance of both transverse cooling mechanisms for attaining a crystalline ion beam.
